RIHEAA Changes to Scholarship & Grants Student Notification Procedures

Dear Colleagues,

Beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year, RIHEAA will notify only eligible students of their Rhode Island State Grant award statuses.  This is a departure from past practice wherein any RI resident who completed a FAFSA was notified of eligibility status even if the student did not have sufficient financial need for a grant, had missed the application deadline, or failed to qualify for other reasons.

This new procedure applies only to students whose initial applications indicate non-eligibility.  It does not apply to students who are offered an award but whose award is later changed, reduced, or revoked because of a change to the original FAFSA information as provided by the student’s financial aid office or via an updated FAFSA record.  Any student whose RI State Grant eligibility changes after being offered an award will be notified of that change by RIHEAA.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions at (401) 736-1172 or by email at mjoyce@riheaa.org

Regional Direct Loan Conference in Boston 03/18/2010

This is a reminder that there will be a Regional Direct Loan Conference in Boston on Thursday, 03/18/2010, at the following location:

Hyatt Regency Cambridge, Overlooking Boston
575 Memorial Drive
Cambridge, MA 02139-4896
Phone: 617-492-1234

You can register at: http://fsaconferences.ed.gov/

Our goal is to ensure that students have access to federal student loans for their education. To accomplish this objective, we want to make sure that institutions of higher education participating in the FFEL Program and wishing to augment their federal student loan options have the resources they need to participate in the Direct Loan Program.

For this reason, Federal Student Aid established the Regional Direct Loan Training Conferences. These free, one-day training workshops will be offered in several locations and provide financial aid professionals at domestic schools with the essential skills necessary to administer the Direct Loan program at their institution.

Financial aid professionals that are interested in participating in the Direct Loan Program, or that are new participants to the program, are encouraged to attend this session. The conference will include instructor-led sessions featuring information about the Direct Loan Program, the systems used to administer the program, and issues to consider if implementing the Direct Loan Program on your campus.

Due to capacity limits at each location, all attendees must pre-register online.

Please see our Program and Agenda section for additional information on the various sessions and the day’s agenda. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at 202-377-3633 or by e-mail at fsaconferences@ed.gov.

We look forward to working with you to meet your training needs. Register soon for a training session near you!

College Goal Sunday

The College Goal Sunday Planning Committee is pleased to share with you the news of the great success of this year’s College Goal Sunday!  The event was held on Sunday, January 31st at 6 locations.  There were approximately 409 students (not counting parents) who attended the event.  This is a 57% increase over last year’s event at 4 locations.  We were really impressed with the number of volunteers, a total of 94, from 12 RI college and universities, 2 high schools, 3 state agencies, and the YMCA.  Thank you to everyone who participated in the event and made it such a success!!!  It would not have happened without you.

We look forward to planning next year’s event and hope that it can be just as successful.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Noel or I with any questions.
